Just the World In Motion

LEA is singing the Songs of the Humanist Community for children everywhere. LEA is a well-known singer in the greater Washington, DC area, who performs at the Washington Ethical Society on occasion.

Peter Bishop started writing songs as he was getting ready to create a Sunday School for the Humanist Community in Silicon Valley, CA. In 1980, he published a songbook of his songs, and soon the Sunday School was operating. With Peter singing his songs for the Sunday School, the other parents in the Sunday School also started writing songs.

Florence Tarbox became one of the significant teachers in the Sunday School, writing plays, teaching great lessons, and writing songs to address the challenges facing kids everywhere. The title song of the CD, It’s Just the World In Motion, was written by Florence Tarbox to help the kids in the Sunday School deal with the disaster when the Challenger space shuttle blew up, killing the first teacher trying to go into space.

Later, when the producer from the Nightline TV show came to Silicon Valley to do an episode of Faith Matters for his show on the Humanist Community’s Sunday School, he was immediately impressed by the lesson this song teaches to kids about how people can deal with the tragedies of life from a secular or humanistic point of view.

Another parent in the Sunday School, Sandy Miller, also started writing songs for the kids. Her songs were somewhat more feminist in nature than the other songs we had written.

Peter also sang several songs for the Sunday School by Malvina Reynolds, who lived in Berkeley, CA, and Mr. Rogers, whose TV show was a favorite of all the kids and the parents.
